Making Mats in Mexico

Nancy DeKelvar (from Barrhaven) travelled last Christmas to the garbage dump village near Puerto Vallarta to help build a community center for the people who live there.   She took with her a collection of milk bags and crochet hooks to teach the children to make mats.   Here is a note from Nancy with some photos that she took.

The mats were a big hit with the children who got involved!  They will be used in the new community centre that New Beginnings is building on the street that runs off the garbage dump.  Even the boys loved to loop the plastic strips to make "wool".  Nine and ten year old girls were the most diligent about doing the crotcheting and even one seven year old who persevered until she learned to crotchet.  Each morning when I would arrive with my bag of bags, the kids clustered around to start looping.  At one point, when my back was turned some of the young ones took a long strip of "wool" and strung it around the palapa and around some rebar posts - as a garland.........most creative.  I took a finished sleeping mat to leave with them but we decided to have the children make small mats for sitting on the cement floor at the new community centre.
